Central State University originated as an advert, traditional and industrial department established at Wilberforce within the late nineteenth century. Within the twentieth century, the department was established as a separate establishment, and swollen to a school and university. The community has 2 traditionally black universities, Wilberforce University and Central State University. Wilberforce University was established in 1856 by the Methodist Episcopal Church and African Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1863 the AME Church bought the school when its temporary closing owing to monetary issues, creating it the primary to be closely-held and operated by African Americans. Several outstanding students have educated there. The previous residence in Wilberforce of Charles Young, a 19th-century ground forces officer WHO educated at Wilberforce, has been selected a National Historic Landmark.
