Weissensee is a resort town within the Southern Limestone Alps on the shore of the Lake Weissensee in Carinthia, in south central Austria. Weissensee is one of the few municipalities in Austria with a Protestant majority. Not until the 1781 Edict of Tolerance by Emperor Joseph II, they were allowed to worship in a Bethaus (“”pray house”” – not a church). The church of today was not built before 1900. Until 1968 the name of the commune was “”Techendorf””; it has been changed for tourist reasons.
In the centre of the town is a bridge crossing over the lake, first mentioned in a deed dated 1348. Summer tourism around the lake is the main component of the local economy. Since 1989 the Alternative Eleven Cities tour is organized there by the SWS (Stichting Winter Sporten) in winter.
