Wardha is a city that is located in the Wardha district of the state of Maharashtra and the city is located to the South of the River Wardha. The new city was founded in 1866 and it is a relatively modern place. The city is known for its cotton production. However there have been settlements in the regions for many centuries and the area was ruled by many kingdoms such as the Satavahanas, Mauryas, Sungas and Vakatakas and each have left their mark on the place. The place has subsequently been ruled by Muslim Dynasties and finally by the British Empire. There are many interesting places that one can visit in the city of Wardha. The city was an important part of the independence movement and Gandhi’s Ashram is located in the city as well. This Ashram has now been converted to a national institute and it is worth visiting. There is a spinning wheel that was used by Gandhi and his spectacles can also be seen in this place. The Ashram also has a chronographic collection of photos that depict the life of Mahatma Gandhi. The nearby city of Sevagram is known as the as the sister city of Wardha and their histories are entwined.

HistoryEdit

Wardha district is one of the 35 districts in Maharashtra state in western India. This district is a part of Nagpur Division. Wardha gets its name from the Wardha River which flows at the North, West and South boundaries of district. Founded in 1866, the town is now an important centre for the cotton trade. It was an important part of Gandhian Era. Wardha is famous for its numerous temples like the Gitai Mandir, the Laxmi Narayan Mandir, the Mahakali Mandir and the Kelzer Temple. The Vishwa Shanti Stupa, the Paramdham Ashram, the Gandhiji Ashram Bapu Kuti – based in the historic Paunar Village – and the Magan Sangrahalaya Museum are other attractions that make Wardha such a hot spot amongst tourists.

By Air : The closest airport is located at Nagpur which is around 74 km from the city of Wardha. The airport has flights from Mumbai on a regular basis and this is a good option for those who are planning to arrive by air. Taxis are available at the airport and they can be hired to reach the place. Taxis charge around Rs 7 per km for non A/C vehicles. It might be advisable to hire an air conditioned vehicle if you are travelling during the summer season, especially in the months of April and May.

By Train : Wardha and Sewagram are an important railway stations in the state and there are frequent train services from places such as Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Delhi, Banglore, Chennai, Kolkata and all over India. Tickets are affordable and trains are comfortable as well. One can hire an auto rickshaw from the railway station to the city center.

By Bus : State government buses link the city of Wardha to Nagpur and these are a cheap option. However they might be crowded. Tickets cost around Rs 50.
