Detail InformationEdit

Vitthal Rukmini mandir, Kaundinyapur situated on a hillock, overlooks the perennially flowing Wardha River. Some believe that in the month of Kartik, Rukmini used to come back to her maternal home in Kaundinyapur. It is also believed that there is a tunnel from the Kaundinyapur temple to another temple of goddess Ambai located close by. However, there is another Ambai temple in Amravati city. The telling and retelling of the mythological story has resulted in some confusion regarding the Ambai temple from where Rukmini is believed to have eloped with Lord Krishna. This place has a history that goes back 5,000 years, and predates even Pandharpur. It certainly deserves to be developed,” she says, adding that she has been pursuing the government for funds to develop Kaundinyapur since 2010. on the second day of the Kaundinyapur pilgrimage, a bhoomipooja was performed for the start of a Rs-21-crore development project of the temple premises and the village. On the full moon day of Kartik, devotees from across Vidarbha converge at Kaundinyapur for an annual pilgrimage that has some parallels with the much more known Pandharpur yatra. Similar to Pandharpur, many devotees of the Varkari sect, in their trademark Gandhi caps, trudge to Kaundinyapur in large groups, chanting and singing abhangs. With barely contained devotional ecstasy, women devotees often break into an impromptu ‘fugdi’ dance. According to one estimate, close to 2 lakh pilgrims are said to visit Kaundinyapur during the two days of pilgrimage.
