Vijayawada the third largest city of the state Andhra Pradesh in India and also known as Bezawada, is placed on the banks of the renowned River Krishna in the south, the Budameru River on the north, the Bay of Bengal in the east and Indrakeeladri Mountain in the west. Vijayawada, literally means place of victory, is a very important place in South India, having the credit of being the largest railway junction in South India. Vijayawada is located in the stretch of the Chennai-Howrah and Chennai-Delhi rail routes and national highways 5 and 9 also touch the city. Mainly inhabited by agricultural community, plenty of canals going through this place irrigate the farm land throughout the Krishna delta. Vijayawada is a significant trade and commerce hub and an important administrative center of Krishna District. Vijayawada was an integral part of Vijayanagar Empire under the great king Sri Krishna Devarayar. Vijayawada is mentioned in various legends and myths. Another myth states that Goddess Durga relaxed in this holy place after destroying a Rakshasa and hence the name Land of Victory or Vijayawada. This place attracts lots of tourists, main tourist attractions are Undavalli Caves, Prakasam Barrage, Gandhi Stupa on Gandhi Hill, The Mogalarajapuram Caves and Kanakadurga Temple.

Vijayawada is the biggest city in the district as well as the 3rd biggest city of this state of southern India. Even famously called Bezawada, the city derived its name from Vijaya or Kanaka Durga, who is the presiding deity. The history of Vijayawada can be traced back to the mythological times. The history of Vijayawada or Vijayavata, as it is termed in a few inscriptions, reveals the religious importance of the place. The remains of the pre-historic man and society of the Stone Age is found all along the River Krishna, which dominates the landscape of Vijayawada. The history of Vijayawada as a cultural and religious center marks an important episode in the history of India. Vijayawada history reveals the power of the prolonged reigns of the Chalukyas of Kalyan and the great king Krishna Deva Raya, on the society and culture of Vijayawada. Vijayawada was even visited by foreign travelers like Hu-yan-Tsang. The religious history of Vijayawada is manifested in the temple of Lord Shiva on the banks of River Krishna. There are also some other important temples in Vijayawada which includes the Kanaka – Durga Devi Temple at Vijayawada.

By Air : Vijayawada airport is located at Gannavaram, which is about 20 km away from the city. Regular flights services are available from Vijayawada to Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam. International travelers have to get connecting flights from Hyderabad. Taxi services are available from Airport to the city, costing about Rs 400.
By Train : Vijayawada is an important railway Station on the Chennai – Delhi rail route. The station is connected to all railway stations in India. Regular train services are available from Vijayawada to Hyderabad (Satavahana Exp), Visakhapatnam (Vskp Garib Rath), Delhi (Swarnajayanti E), Mumbai (Konark Express), Kolkata (Vsg Howrah Exp), Chennai (Ghy Sbc Express) and Bangalore (Hte Ypr Express).
By BUS : APSRTC buses connect Vijayawada with all other cities in Andhra Pradesh. Many tourist bus service providers offer deluxe, super deluxe and A/C bus services from Vijayawada to many major cities in South and Central India, including Chennai, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Bangalore and Mumbai. These buses charge about Rs 2-4 per km.

By Other : Auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are also available in Vijayawada, with auto rickshaws being the faster mode of transport. They do not run on meter and fares have to be fixed or negotiated in advance. Tariffs during night travel may be one and a half times the actual rate. Cycle rickshaw rides are cheap and fares will range anywhere within Rs 5-15, but these rickshaws are very slow.
