While most of the Saint Lucia tourism industry is located on the western coastline, Vieux Fort, which is the second largest city on the island, is situated down south. Home to Saint Lucia’s Hewanorra International Airport, Vieux Fort is surrounded by several small communities like Black Bay, Augier, Belle Vue, Grace, Vige and Zaboo. This former center of the 18th century Saint Lucia sugar industry is now much more industrial and has erected new modern infrastructure to reflect these claims. Featuring the biggest fish market in the country, Vieux Fort is an interesting mix of the past and present.
Close to the Maria Islands Nature Reserve, which is a notable tourist attraction featuring an indigenous species of Saint Lucia iguana and favorite nestling grounds for leatherback turtles, there are quite a few hotels located within the Vieux Fort Quarter. Displaying several historic colonial houses which provide the Old Town area of Vieux Fort a touch of England and France, this town also served as an important base for American troops during the Second World War.
