Among the most impressive fortifications of the British era are The Victoria Lines. They were completed in 1897 and named in honour of the British Queen’s Diamond Jubilee of that same year. The Lines cut east west across Malta, running for 12 km along the top of a great, natural fault. The Knights of St John designed the Lines to defend Malta from Northern attack. Forts are positioned along the Lines: Madliena Fort, Fort Mosta, Bingemma Fort and Fort Pembroke.
However, the Forts and the Victoria Lines never saw military action. Nevertheless, the fortifications are positioned on a stretch of scenic landscape and make an excellent place to walk. The best preserved section is the Dwerja Lines, to the north of Mdina.
There are several other places and sites of interest along the Lines, notably the prehistoric, rock-cut tombs and enigmatic cart ruts near the Bingemma Gap in the ridge.
