Vejle is a town in Denmark, in the southeast of the Jutland Peninsula at the head of Vejle Fjord, where the Vejle and Grejs Rivers and their valleys converge. It is the site of the councils of Vejle Municipality and the Region of Southern Denmark. Vejle Municipality is part of the East Jutland metropolitan area with some 1.2 million inhabitants.
The city is also part of an informal region called the Trekantområde (Triangle Area), which consists of Vejle and the neighbouring cities of Kolding and Fredericia. Vejle is most known for its forested hills, fjord, harbour, shopping, pedestrian mall, and iconic windmill. The word “Vejle” derives from the Old Danish word weethel, meaning “ford” or “wading place” due to its location at a busy crossing over Vejle River. During Viking times, the wetlands around Vejle had to be crossed at the Ravning Bridge, a nearly half-mile wooden boardwalk.For a country where the highest natural elevation is only about 170 m (558 ft) above sea level, Vejle is known for the forested hills that rise to the north and south of the town and fjord.Highway E45 passes close to downtown Vejle on the Vejle Fjord Bridge.
