The Vaigai Dam is built across the Vaigai River near Andipatti, in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu, southern India. It provides water for irrigation for the Madurai district and the Dindigul district as well as drinking water to Madurai and Andipatti. Near the dam, the Government of Tamil Nadu has constructed an Agricultural Research Station for researching the growing of a variety of crops, including rice, sorghum, blackgram, cowpea and cotton.Vagai River at Andipatti, this massive dam is a sight to behold. It is the central source of drinking and irrigation water for Madurai and hence of great strategic and political importance. This popular leisure spot beautifully illuminated on weekends, offers a breath-taking sight. It is also become a popular picnic spot, especially for group excursions. The area surrounding the dam is rich in vegetation, with lush greenery spread across its sprawling acres. Though the area lacks any official amenities for a proper picnic, you can always plan a laid back afternoon here.
