Vadakkunathan Temple is the most famous temple in Thrissur. Thrissur owes its name to Sri Vadakkunathan, the Lord Shiva. Located in the heart land of Thrissur, the prime deity in the temple is Lord Shiva with many other idols placed in and around. Placed in a picturesque hillock, the temple has beautiful surroundings and is included among one of the oldest temples in Kerala. The most popular festival of Kerala, Thrissur pooram is hosted by Vadakkunatha temple. The temple promotes many temple arts and cultural performances. The architecture of the temple depicts traditional Kerala Style, also housing many mural paintings and art forms.

Vadakkunathan Temple, construction was done at the time of Perumthachan from Parayi petta panthirukulam. It is said that Perumthachan lived during the seventh century; so the Koothambalam may be 1,300 years old. According to Malayalam historian VVK Valath, the temple was pre-Dravidian temple Kavu. Later the temple was influenced by Buddhism, Jainism and Vaishnavism. In the early days, Paramekkavu Bhagavathi was also inside the Vadakkunnathan temple. But Koodalmanikyam Temple, Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple and Ammathiruvadi Temple, Urakam is older than Vadakkunnathan temple, according to temple documents.
