The fifth America Coast Guard cutter named Mohawk (WPG-78) was designed by Edward Bouverie Pusey & Jones house., Wilmington, Delaware, and launched one Oct 1934. She was commissioned on nineteen January 1935. She was 1st assigned patrol and general icebreaking duties on the Hudson and Delaware Rivers, and also the natural event of war found her stationed at Cape May, New Jersey. In accordance with govt Order No. 89-29 of one Nov 1941, Mohawk was directed to function a part of the military service of the us. Assigned to Atlantic Ocean escort operations with the Gronland Patrol, wherever she served for the whole war, Mohawk launched a complete of fourteen attacks against submarine contacts between twenty seven August 1942 and eight April 1945.
The USS Mohawk CGC Memorial deposit was based by the Miami Dade Historical Maritime deposit. The ship was berthed in Key West, at United States President city district.
Mohawk was found in an exceedingly Staten Island scrap yard by Frans Boetes, then president and corporate executive of Mohawk’s Memorial deposit. She had been there erosion for over fifteen years. Once some initial repairs, she was towed to Miami, wherever substantial repairs were created, and on to Key West wherever she was berthed at the inner dock wall, at the previous Navy pier within the United States President city district.
