Ueda (, Ueda-shi) is a city in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. The city was formed on March 6, 2006, when the city of Ueda, the towns of Maruko, Sanada and the village of Takeshi (all from Chiisagata District) merged to form the city of Ueda. The new city replaced the former city of Ueda for the first time in 87 years since Ueda became a city in 1919. As of June 1, 2011,the population of the city of Ueda is 158,187and 61,091households with a population density of 286.57 peopleSquare kilometers. The area of the city is 552.00Square kilometers, which makes it the fifth largest in Nagano Prefecture. Anraku-ji in Bessho Onsen, Ueda has the only extant octagonal pagoda in Japan. The pagoda has been designated as National Treasure.
