Tulian / Tarsir Lake is situated at a height of approximately 4000 m above sea level, at a distance of about 15 km from Pahalgam near Aru. Also known as Tarsir Lake, this place can be reached after a two-day trek from Aru. Apart from this, hired pony rides are also convenient means for reaching the Lake. A prominent feature of the lake is that it remains frozen almost throughout the year.

Tulian Lake is 16 kilometres from Pahalgam via Baisaran Meadows, up and down rough rocky inclines. Tulian Lake which is covered with snow for most part of the year owing to its latitude. This trail entails wading through streams with boulders and sharp 3-point motorable road till Baisaran and then on begins the rocky mountain terrain. This 32-kilometre round trek commencing at Pahalgam could be completed in one day based on the trekker’s physical fitness and speed plus one must start at dawn. Else, it is a 2-day trek to the Tulian Lake and back. Though each hill looks different from the other it is very easy to lose a sense of direction in this geography therefore an experienced ‘Tulian Lake mountain-guide’ is recommended to be hired. Experienced ‘Pony-wallahs’ (locals who let out their ponies for ferrying luggage and people in the hilly regions) are also well-versed with the route to the Tulian Lake. The Gujjar encampments may be found on this trail. You could request them for a cup of tea which is the closes you would get to ‘Kashmiri Chai’ (Tea) in this area. Compensate them generously to keep their spirits up.
