Tribal Museum along with others in Pune has always been a centre of attraction for people from Pune and tourists from all across the world. Different primordial tribes in Maharashtra have always been an interesting topic for research. That apart even as a common modern man one is curious about the culture and the lifestyle of these tribes. Taken in to consideration this common curiosity and also in an attempt of preserving different aspects of the tribal culture for the generations to come, the Tribal Museum on the Queen’s Road in Pune was constructed. The museum displays hundreds of different articles used by different tribal communities living in the state of Maharashtra. As you enter in, you are in an altogether different world. The splendid display of the lifestyle of the tribal communities in general and those belonging to the Sahyadri and Gondwana regions of Maharashtra literally hypnotize the visitors. The articles in the daily use of the tribal communities, their ornaments, musical instruments, clothes, utensils, weapons and many more have been artistically kept here for the general display. As you move on spending some time at each section of the museum, you feel the grandeur and the glory of the Indian culture. The pictures and the artifacts made by these people are just amazing. They may not be perfect masterpieces from the technical point of view; but they have got the flavor of the soil. You get a glimpse of and a short introduction with the customs and traditions of the tribal communities. The museum thus attracts not only the tourists and common visitors; but also researchers and archeologists.

Tribal Museum is Managed and maintained by Tribal Research and training Institute. The museum is dedicated to the various tribes living in the state of Maharashtra. It endeavors to showcase the lifestyle as well as the cultures of the tribal people, with special emphasis on the tribal communities that belong to the Sahyadri and Gondhavana regions of the state.

Train : Pune railway station is the main railway head of Pune. It is located on HH Prince Aga Khan Rd, Sangamvadi. Good rail networks connect Pune with all other rail junctions in India. Air : Pune airport is located about 10 km away from the heart of the city, in the Lohagaon area. Taxi charge from airport to city is only Rs 200. Regular, direct flights are available from Pune to many cities in India. The cities Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai are all air connected to Pune. Others : Auto-rickshaws : There is also a huge army of three wheeled rickshaws. There are some prepaid rickshaw stands at Shivajinagar, Swargate Bus Depot and Lohegaon Airport. From here autorickshaw is easily available to reach these sight.

Safety / WarningEdit

  • While traveling from Pune to Mumbai beware of touts who induce you into cheaper travel. Rather take the Asiad buses from the regular stand at the Pune station or the crowded luxury buses which are safer options.
  • The auto rickshaw drivers can overcharge so ask them for meter readings and follow the rules of the meter while making payments.
  • The city is heavily polluted in crowded junctions so avoid traveling in rush hours.
  • Do not trust strangers while traveling and avoid traveling out late at night in lonely areas, though Pune is relatively a safe city, and the crime rate is low.
