A Himachal getaway need not be limited to the state’s most popular hill station Shimla. Once you’re done exploring the state capital, venture out to discover some of the lesser-known but equally picturesque destinations in the area. Here are a few places that are ideal for a short getaway.
Kufri
Kufri, a quaint little hill station, 13 km from Shimla, is all about wondrous views, snow clad mountains and wildlife attractions. This exotic hamlet has several potato plantations which turns into a popular Ski tracks during winter. Honeymooners and families throng here to enjoy snowfall and skiing, while the trekking and hiking trails attracts adventure buffs. Wildlife enthusiasts also come here to sight the endangered snow tigers and rare animals in the various wildlife parks located here. Kufri enjoys cool climate all through the year.
Chail Wildlife Sanctuary
A former hunting ground of the Maharaja of Patiala, Chail Wildlife Sanctuary is amongst the lesser known wildlife sanctuaries in the country. It is situated 63 km from Shimla in Himachal Pradesh. Chail is one of the most well maintained wildlife sanctuaries and houses a rich collection of flora and fauna. Situated in the Himalayan ranges at a height of 7152 feet, Chail boasts of salubrious climate, magnificent views and a rich cover of greenery. The sanctuary is a paradise for nature lovers and bird watchers.The wildlife sanctuary is located on the outskirts of Chail that overlooks the Sutlej Valley. Along with Shimla and Kufri, Chail forms the Golden Triangle of Himachal Pradesh.
Naldehra Golf Club
The Naldehra Golf Club is an unusual course, and is regarded as one of the most challenging courses to play at in the country. Perched at an altitude of 2,200 meters, surrounded by a thick canopy of Deodar trees, it is a 18 hole golf course with 16 Greens and 18 Tees. Designed over a long sloping glade, it boasts of considerable character, with wide views of the Himalayas and thick woods all around. There’s even an ancient temple just beside the greens.
Himalayan Bird Park
The Himalayan Aviary or the Himalayan Bird Park is located opposite the Viceregal Lodge, at a height of over 2000 meters. A wonderful place for nature lovers, it comprises of lush green pastures awash with rare plants and trees and a huge collection of bird species like peafowl, pheasants, the Himalayan Monal, peacocks etc. Visit during the summer to make the most of your experience.
