Not many are the people in South India who have not heard of the textile centre, Tirupur. It is located 47 kilometres away from the city of Coimbatore, in Tamil Nadu. Textiles produced here are sold in markets throughout the country.Some of the attractions that the city of Tirupur is famous for, in addition to the numerous textile factories, are the famous temples which date back to the glorious ages of the Cholas and Pandyas. Several legends surround the city of Tirupur and the many ancient temples it boasts of such as Arulmigu Avinashi Lingeswarar Thirukoil at Avinashi, Tirupur Tirupathi temple and Sukreeswarar Temple. Among these is the story of the Visveswaraswamy temple that lies in the heart of the city. One of the oldest of the temples that exist in the city. As legend has it, the Shiva Linga that is worshipped inside the temple, was left behind by a King who was carrying it with him, back from a pilgrimage to Kasi. The city has also seen its fair share of revolution. It was one of the most politically volatile spots during the days of the freedom struggle in Tamil Nadu and has given the country great patriots like Tiruppur Kumaran who has a memorial statue in the heart of the city.

By Air : Coimbatore has a major airport and Tirupur can be easily reached by taking a flight to Coimbatore.

By Train : Tirupur has a railway station and almost all expresses trains that ply down south stop here. Regular trains will be available from the cities and towns of Coimbatore, Erode, Bangalore, Salem, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kanyakumari. Train fares will range between Rs 150 to 300 for the basic class of travel.

By Bus : Buses are the preferred mode of transport in the state of Tamil Nadu. The region has a very well established network of buses, and regular buses ply everywhere between all major cities and minor towns and villages. There are regular buses from the nearby cities and towns of Pollachi and Coimbatore to Tirupur. There are also buses from Salem, Erode, Ariyalur, Chidambaram, Theni, Rajapalayam, Madurai and Dindigul. Bus fares normally range around Rs 50 to 500 depending on the distance involved. Buses from Chennai and Madurai are available in air conditioned and non air conditioned varieties. Buses to Kochi, Trivandrum and Trichur are also available from the neighboring state of Kerala.
