The Nellaiappar temple in the town of Tirunelveli is also a very popular destination where tourists and pilgrims converge. This temple is dedicated to the main deity, Lord Shiva. The temple is an architectural marvel that is sure to pique the interest of any architecture buff. The Nellaiappar temple is also located bang in the middle of the town, so access to the temple is easy. The temple car or ‘rath’ here is the third largest in the country and weighs around 400 tons.

Tirunelveli District is a district of Tamil Nadu state. Tirunelveli one of the most charming places in Tamil Nadu is nearly 2000 years old. It has been glorified and also considered as the one of the beautiful city of the state which attracts lot of tourist every year. Tirunelveli situated on the banks of river Tamirabharani was once the capital of the Pandyas. The temples in Tirunelveli mostly belongs to the Pandya dynasty with excellent architecture and is even today very well preserved. It is also considered as one of the important pilgrimage centre towards the south of Tamilnadu. Apart from all this Tirunelveli is also home for natural wonders in its surroundings that attracts tourists from different parts of the world. The city is also famous for its reputed institutions and hence Palayamkottai is known as the “Oxford of South India”. Tirunelveli is also known as the Halwa town.

By Air : Nearest airport is at Coimbatore which is well connected to the major cities in the country.

By Train : Trains to Tirunelveli mainly ply from the main cities and towns of Coimbatore, Chennai, Madurai and Thanjavur and these trains will charge around Rs 200 to 400 depending in the class of travel. Air conditioned coaches may cost more. The town of Tirunelveli has a major railway station where there are frequent trains from the neighboring state of Kerala too.

By Bus : Buses will be frequently available from other cities and towns within the state like Coimbatore, Tirupur, Dindigul, Theni, Thanjavur and Kanyakumari. Buses are the preferred mode of travel among the local and bus fares can cost you around 200 to 500 rupees. Both air conditioned and non air conditioned buses will be available, and travelling in an AC bus will be better given its climate. There are countless buses that ply to the town of Tirunelveli from the cities of Madurai and Trichy.
