Tikona Fort, also known as ‘Triangle Fort’. This hill fort, renowned as Vitandgad Fort, is located in the Maval region of Lonavala (West Maharashtra). Built in a triangular shape, the fort is situated on the Tikona peak, near the Pavana River (Kamshet). This fortress has been home for many dynasties that ruled the Maratha region, along with being the major centre of activities of the Pauna Mawal. The small lakes and water tanks inside the fort served as the main source of water in the old days. The entrance of the fort is the major attraction. This fort encloses numerous Buddhist caves and Satvahan caves with a temple of ‘Trimbakeshwar Mahadev’ inside. Besides, the landmark draws numerous trekkers and nature lovers. Trekking to the top of the fort provides views of the entire Mawal region, including adjacent Tung Fort, Lohgad, Visapur, Bhatrashi hill, Morse hill, Jambhuli Hill, Pauna region and Fagne Dam.

HistoryEdit

Tikona Fort was a strategic nexus: the centre of control for the entire Pawana Mawal region. In 1660, Dhamale family one of the Deshmukh from Maval region was charged with ensuring the security of fort Tikona. Jaysingh invaded the region in 1665 and the local villages were by Dilerkhan but the forts held out. Tikona fort was surrendered to the Mughal warrior Kubadkhan, who had attacked the region together with Halal Khan and others, according to the Treaty of Purandar signed on 12 June 1665. Kubad DKhan took over the fort on 18 June but it was later recaptured by the Marathas.

Bus : State owned buses connect nearest cities with the hill station Lonavala. Any tourist service providers arrange package tours by A/C deluxe buses to Lonavala from Mumbai and Pune.

Train : Lonavala is situated on the main railway line that plies from Mumbai to Pune. All trains that shuttle between the two cities stop here. From Mumbai, the approximate travel time would be around 3 hours, while from Pune it takes around 1 hour to reach Lonavala.

Air : Lonavala is located midway between two major cities of Maharashtra, Mumbai and Pune. Thus, if you are flying to Lonavala, you need to touch down at either the domestic airport at Pune (66 kilometers from Lonavala) or the international airport at Mumbai (110 kilometers from Lonavala) and from there, take a cab or a train.
