Thenmala is an important tourist destination in the State of Kerala, located in the Kollam District. India’s first planned Eco Tourism destination, it is divided into 5 zones namely; Cultural zone, Adventure zone, Leisure zone, Boating zone & Deer Rehabilitation zone. This location is famous for being the backdrop of several regional film shootings. The region is popular for the Thenmala Dam, which has a bridge that is built across the Dam. This place is host to many domestic as well as foreign travelers. Some of the attractions here are boating across the lake located near the Dam, a visit to the deer park and a musical fountain. The deer park is home to many species of wild deer and there are a few tree houses that are located in the park, where tourists can get a glimpse of tribal life. A walk on the rope bridge located nearby isa good experience. Adventure enthusiasts can enjoy trekking and mountain climbing. For the more relaxed traveler, nature walks are an ideal way to enjoy nature. There is also a waterfall located nearby called the Palaruvi Falls, visiting which which would make your relaxing experience complete. The region is lush green & surrounded by tall trees. Mountain biking is something that has been started recently and this is a good option for thrill seekers.

Thenmala is a tourist place near Punalur town, Kollam district in Kerala. Thenmala is the first planned eco-tourism destination in India. The Thenmala dam was built across Kallada River. Thenmala is famous for being the shooting location in Malayalam and Tamil movies.Thenmala attracts foreign and domestic tourists with a host of attractions. Boating on the lake, a rope bridge, trekking, mountaineering, biking and a musical fountain. Thenmala is approachable both from Trivandrum and Punalur by road. The waterfall called Palaruvi is a prime attraction nearby. Also nearby is a deer rehabilitation center where visitors can see deer in a forest setting and have a peep into a traditional tree house used by forest dwellers to escape harm from wild animals. Other places near Thenmala are Kulathupuzha, Anchal, Punalur, Kamukumchery and Shenkottah in Tirunelveli district (Tamil Nadu). Themala is 72 km from Thiruvanathapuram and 16 km from Palaruvi Falls.

By Air : The nearest airport is at Thiruvananthapuram which is around 72 km from the place. This airport is served by many domestic flights and it is connected to some of the important cities in the country. If you are arriving by air, this is a good option.

By Train : The closest railway station is located at Kollam, which is around 66 km from the town of Thenmala. Kollam is one of the biggest railway stations in the state and there are many trains that are arriving from different parts of the state. If you are arriving at the railway station, it is advisable to book a taxi from through the hotel. The local transport might not be reliable. Some tourist taxis may be available from the Kollam railway station to Thenmala. They charge between Rs 7 and Rs 12 per km for the trip.

By Bus : Government buses are available from Trivandrum to Thenmala. They can be boarded at the Central Bus Station and they depart every hour. This is a good option as they are cheap and relatively comfortable. Tickets cost around Rs 100 for the trip.
