The Parliament House of the state of New South Wales has great heritage significance; it being the oldest and the first Parliament in the country. This building complex is home to some of the oldest buildings of Sydney. When Governor Lachlan Macquarie landed in the colony, he found out that there were no permanent medical facilities. With no funds for the construction, he managed to have a permanent hospital built in the city of Sydney in 1816. The money needed to build the hospital was raised from the import of Rum by the building contractors and therefore, the hospital was known as the Rum Hospital.
The Parliament of NSW is housed in two wings of the hospital which were originally the residences of the surgeons working for the hospital. The second chamber i.e. the Legislative Council Chamber is in fact a pre-fabricated cast-iron building that was shipped from Glasgow, Scotland and was assembled in 1856.
