The ruin of the Thaur castle dates back to the 11th and 15th century. In the 13th century, the Count of Hirschberg enlarged the castle to make it the biggest of its kind in the Inntal valley. In 1284 it was taken over by the Count of Tirol. The castle was destroyed by fire in 1536 and suffered an earthquake in 1670.
