Detail InformationEdit
“Officially opened in 1985, Technology Park Bentley is Australia’s second oldest Technology Park.In 1987 the Western Precinct was opened, housing the prestigious Australian Resources Research Centre (ARRC).
Some 110 companies currently operate at any one time in the Park, which is operating at maximum capacity, while all new tenants require government ministerial approval to locate in the Park. Tenants include Australian Institute of Technology, Bone Medical, Curtin University, Horizon Power and the University of New South Wales, to name a few.
The park is governed by the State Government’s Industry and Technology Development (ITD) Act (1998), which regulates the nature of businesses that can operate within the park, ensuring tenancies’ enterprises have a technological and innovation focus in research and development. The Western Australian Government’s Minister for Science and Innovation is ultimately responsible for the strategic direction and management of the Park. This is unique in Australia.
Approximately 70% of the land is privately owned. In 2009 Senator Kim Carr, Federal Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research announced the establishment of a high performance computing centre which will contribute to data-intensive research in many disciplines, including mineralogy and chemistry, and primarily astronomy and space science.Minister Carr announced the centre will be named after the ‘father of Australian radio astronomy’ Dr Joseph Lade Pawsey (1908–1962). The Pawsey Centre will be located in the Western Precinct of Technology Park Bentley, and is expected to be commissioned in 2013.
Technology Park Bentley is home to the Innovation Centre of Western Australia (ICWA). The Innovation Centre’s key objectives are: • to provide infrastructure and services to support emerging innovative enterprises; • to bridge the gap between the development and commercialisation of ideas into viable and sustainable enterprises and products; and • to assist existing businesses to identify commercialisation opportunities.ICWA includes a Technology Incubator which provides support for start-up technology companies.”
