Detail InformationEdit
The Teatro de la Zarzuela is a theatre in Madrid, Spain. The theatre is today mainly devoted to zarzuela (the Spanish traditional musical theatre genre), as well as operetta and recitals.
The theater was designed by Jerónimo de la Gándara and José María Sánchez Guallart, opening in 1856 on the birthday of Queen Isabella II. It provided a venue for “Zarzuela Theatre”, which combines spoken scenes with scenes that include song and dance. Originally the ceiling of the hall was decorated with a magnificent set of works by the painters Francisco Hernandez Tome and Manuel Castellanos, but these were eventually destroyed during renovations and structural changes. The original building burned down in 1909, but Cesareo Iradier later rebuilt it. The theater was renovated again in 1956.
