Sundarban tour is a must for those planning a holiday in West Bengal. Tarapith is one of the Sakthi Pithas spotted across all over India. The name Tarapith, sitting place of Goddess Tara, is originated from the belief that Goddess Tara (Sakthi – one form of Devi) is located at this place.According to Hindu mythology, Sati (wife of Lord Siva) was insulted by her father Dakshmaharaj at the Yagna Place and she took extreme step of self immolation in the Yagna pyre. Knowing this, Lord Siva started his intensive Thandava Nrutham (dance). Gods were afraid that the whole world will face destruction if it is not stopped. Lord Vishnu using his Sudarshan Chakra, cut the body of Sati into pieces and the body parts were scattered in 51 locations all over Indian subcontinent. At these holy places Sakthi temples were erected. Tarapith is one such place where the eye ball of Sati had fallen. At this temple, Sakthi is worshipped. Tarapith is also famous for world known great saint Bamakhayapa. It is believed that near the burning ground in Tarapith the saint Bamakhayapa sat in meditation. Maa Tara appeared before him and gave him divine power. There are many smaller temples in Tarapith. One can pay visit to these temples without much hassles. One can visit a nearby temple city of Bakreswar from here.
