Recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site since 1982, the Tai National Park (TNP) is home to the five mammalian species which are on the threatened red list. Home to the pygmy hippopotamus, the olive Colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, leopards and the Jentink’s duiker, the TNP is sprawled over a massive 3,300 square kilometer area. One of the last remnants of West African primary tropical forests, TNP features a predominantly, dense evergreen vegetation located within south-west Cote d’Ivoire at a distance of 100 kilometers from the North Atlantic coastline.
Showcasing over 1,300 species of higher plants of which more than 50 percent are endemic specific to the region, the flora of these areas are largely composed of water-demanding species. Over 47 species of typical West African fauna are found to thrive within these rainforests along with 230 species of avifauna. However, in order to visit the TNP, a permit from the concerned Ministry in Abidjan is essential.
