Swamithoppe, which was earlier known as Poovandanthoppu, is located in the village of Nanchi Naadu in Kanyakumari District. It is famous, as the birth pace of Ayya Vaikundar, believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He was a visionary who was responsible for revolutionising Hindu religion and implementing social reforms for the people of South Travancore, by propagating a philosophy of one God, one religion and one caste. He wanted to simplify religion to make it accessible to the common man and set up five pathis or pilgrim centres for his followers. Swamithoppe is considered the first pathi as Ayya spent most of his life here. There is a temple in the village where the followers of Ayya worship. The uniqueness of the temple is that it has no idol and no priest to perform pujas. The main deity is Ayya Narayanar, a unity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.
