Swamimalai, literally “Mountain of the God”, is a holy town located west of the town in the district of in. It is known for the famous Lord Muruga temple, one of the six holy abodes of Lord Muruga. Swamimalai, the abode of the Swami (Lord Muruga), got its name from the located on an artificial hill (malai). The town is ideally located at a natural setting on the banks of the River Cauvery. The travelers to this place are mostly Hindu pilgrims intended to offer worship to Lord Muruga in Swaminathaswamy Temple. There are many mythical stories for the origin of the place Swamimalai. One of the myths relates it with the Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma and Lord Muruga and the explanation of the meaning of the Pranava Mantra “OM” by Lord Muruga to his father Lord Shiva. This town has a renowned school teaching the art and craft of making bronze idols. Tiruvalanchuzhi temple is another attraction in this place and this place is located near to the Swaminathaswamy Temple. It is believed that visiting this place will eradicate the evils from the mind and the body. Offering prayers Muruga will provide good to the earthly life of the devotees. This temple town has many facilities for the comfortable visit of the travelers.

By Air : The nearest airport to Swamimalai is Trichy at distance of 90 km away. Domestic flights operate from this aerodrome. Regular flights are available to Chennai International airport.
