A seaside beach resort which is home to 42,000 inhabitants, Swakopmund Town is located at a distance of 280 kilometers to the west of Windhoek. Founded in 1892 as a harbor by the Germans, Swakopmund features several structures depicting traditional German colonial architecture. A favorite coastal town for Namibians on holiday where a substantial number of Swakopmund residents are still found to speak German today, this popular town along the Atlantic Coast is fondly known as ‘Swakop’.
Sitting at the edge of the Namib Desert at the mouth of Swakop River, this city is small enough to easily be explored on foot. Featuring several bars, hotels, coffee-shops and nightclubs, Swakopmund offers numerous activities for visitors which include quad biking, sky diving, surfing, sand-boarding, horse rides, camel safaris, balloon rides and small marine cruises. Enjoying a mild desert climate, other tourist attractions of this favorite beach-town are the Aquarium, Cape Cross, EHRA Elephant Conservation Tours and the nearby Okakambe Trails.
