The most important commercial, political and administrative center of the Fiji Islands, Suva has served as a capital of this island nation since 1877. Located along the southeastern coast of the main Viti Levu Island, Suva is a beautiful harbor-town alongside the main Fijian port, literally reaching out into the sea. Home to almost half of the Fijian population, metropolitan Suva is extensively well spread over a 2,048 square kilometer area. Along with the neighboring cities of Lami, Nasinu and Nausori, Suva featuring a great mix of modern buildings and traditional colonial architecture, is a large urban complex with an ever expanding borderline.
Featuring a tropical rainforest climate, Suva provides 3,000 mm precipitation annually, which literally translates into rains almost everyday throughout the year, including summers. Perched on the heights of a hilly peninsula, Suva is the largest urban area within the South Pacific, excluding Australia and New Zealand.
