Suru Valley, is the preetiest valley of Ladakh which divides two of the world’s largest formidable mountain ranges. Lying nestled along the north-eastern foothills of the great Himalayan Wall, The general topography of this valley is rugged and mountaineous. However, this valley is relatively more fertile than other valleys of Ladakh, due to its location which is formed by the catchements of Suru river. The average altitude of the valley is above 3000 mtrs. Although immobilized in winter by heavy snowfall, its fields are watered by streams from the surrounding mountains, the major crops of the valley are wheat and barley. The cold season begins around mid-November and continues till May. The open valley adorned with undulating alpine meadows strewn with wild flowers, groves of poplars. The valleys are especially picturesque in spring when the apple, apricot and mulberry trees are in full bloom all around. The inhabitants of Suru Valley are the Baltis. They are admixture of the Dards from Dardistan and the Mongoloids from Tibet.

Suru Valley covers the catchment area of the famous Suru River. Suru river originates from the Panzella glacier. Before it joins the Indus River at Nurla it is joined by numerous tributaries, including the Dras River at Kharul. Suru Valley forms the mainstay of Kargil district. Sankoo, Panikhar, Rangdum and Padum in the Suru and Zanskar Valleys are the base for a variety of trekking routes. The valley is nestled along the north-eastern foothills of the Himalayan range and from Kargil. People living in Suru Valley are mainly of Tibet and Darad descent – most of them converted their religion in the 16th century. The beauty of this Suru Valley region is further added by two towering peaks of Kun (7035 m) and Nun (7135 m) which loom over the skyline. The general topography and mountains in most of the areas in Ladakh differs from the Suru Valley as Suru Valley is relatively more fertile extending from the Panzella glacier to south of Kargil town. In Kargil the Suru River merges with the Botkul River which originates from the Botkul glacier. The upper reaches of the valley, particularly around the Sankoo bowl, the Panikhar expanse and the higher stretch beyond, present a spectacle of breathtaking features – majestic mountain ramparts crowned by snow capped peaks, undulating alpine slopes draining into wild mountain streams of foaming cascades of pristine water, awesome glaciers descending along the Himalayan slopes to the river bed in riverine formation, Quaint villages of adobe houses straggling dry hillocks surrounded by large tracts of lush crops downward the patches of alpine pastures uphill.

Taxi : This place is well connected by road.Suru Valley Situated 140 kms south of Kargil.and is easily accessible by taxis from leh.

BUS : This place is well connected by leh .Himachal Tourism and State Transport Corporation along with J&K SRTC and several other travel companies run regular bus service to Leh.Suru Valley Situated 140 kms south of Kargil and it takes 3-4 hrs from leh.

Train : The closest railway station is Jammu, there are regular train services from Delhi and many other cities to Jammu railway station, from Jammu you can take buses or taxi ride to Srinagar and then to Leh. From Leh you can take bus or taxi to Suru Valley Situated 140 kms south of Kargil .If you are for more adventures you can also rent bikes, available on rent in Leh and will cost you anywhere between rupees 600 a day for an Enfield to rupees 300 for others.

Air : Nearest Airport is Leh Airport .The following airlines (Kingfisher, Jet Airways, and Air India) operate regular flights to Leh from Delhi, Jammu and Srinagar. The duration of Delhi-Leh flight is just an hour long. Better booked the air-tickets before 2 or 3 months in advance because during May to October tickets prices are very high due to heavy tourist influx. From Leh you can take bus or taxi to Suru Valley Situated 140 kms south of Kargil. Ladakh is one of the safest parts of India, and the most basic precautions are enough to keep you and your possessions safe. Most of the region is dotted with military cantonments every 50-80 kms, but mainly because of its strategic position on international border between India and China. The army plays major part in rescue and aid efforts and that is why you will require to produce identification documents or written permission from local authorities before entering some remote places.
