Stonington initial gained wealth within the decennium once its harbor was home to a fleet engaged within the profitable protection exchange that the skins of seals clubbed on islands off the Chilean and Patagonian coasts were sold as fur in China. The city of Stonington is found in New London County, Connecticut, within the state’s southeastern corner. It includes the borough of Stonington, the villages of Pawcatuck, Lords purpose, Wequetequock, the japanese halves of the villages of Mystic and previous Mystic (the different halves being within the city of Groton). The population of the city was seventeen,906 at the 2000 census.
