Stockholm is the capital, financial centre and the largest city of Sweden and constitutes the most populated urban area in Scandinavia.Stockholm is located on Sweden’s south-central east coast, where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. The central parts of the city consist of fourteen islands that are continuous with the Stockholm archipelago. Stockholm is the site of the national Swedish government, the Parliament of Sweden, the Supreme Court of Sweden , and the official residence of the Swedish monarch as well as the prime minister. Major Swedish banks, such as Swedbank, Handelsbanken, and Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken, are headquartered in Stockholm.
This city offers almost everything a visitor is looking for. Where 30 percent of the city area is made up of waterways and another 30 percent making up for parks and green spaces, Stockholm perhaps is one of the freshest metropolitan cities on the European continent. The city’s oldest section is “Gamla Stan” (Old Town), located on the original small islands of the city’s earliest settlements and still featuring the medieval street layout. The oldest building in Stockholm is the Riddarholmskyrkan from the late 13th century.Stockholm is one of the most crowded museum-cities in the World with around 100 museums, visited by millions of people every year. The most renowned national museum is the Nationalmuseum, with Sweden’s largest collection of art: 16,000 paintings and 30,000 objects of art handicraft.Other notable museums are Stockholm City Museum,Skansen, the archetype of open-air museums, and Nordic Museum.
