St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral, Bhopal is one of the parishes of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of the East (Indian Orthodox Church) whose supreme head is the Catholicose of the East. It comes under the Kolkata diocese. It is proclaimed fact that the Orthodox Syrian Church of the east was established in Kerala, India and the Apostle of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

St. Thomas established the Malankara Orthodox Church church in A.D.52. It is interesting to note that the formation of Madhya Pradesh, India and the beginning of the St. Thomas Orthodox Church, Bhopal are almost same in the period. Madhya Pradesh came to existence in November 1956 and the St. Thomas Orthodox church was established on 24th March 1957. On 20th Nov. 1994, His Holiness Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews II celebrated the Holy Qurbana and Declared The St.Thomas Orthodox Syrian Church, Bhopal as CATHEDRAL and Renamed it “BHOPAL ST.THOMAS ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL”, in the presence of H. G. Stephanos Mar Theodosius Metropolitan and H. G. Geevarghese Mar Coorilos Metropolitan. Thus the Parish was elevated as a Cathedral (Cathedral = Chair of the Bishop – Cathedral is the Main Church in a Metropolis or city where the Metropolitan resides) in 20th November 1994 by His Holiness Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews II, The Catholicos of the East, the 89th successor to the Throne of St.Thomas. St.Thomas Orthodox Church, Bhopal marks the living presence of the ancient Christian Church of India in Bhopal, The Capital city of Madhya Pradesh. It is the largest parish of the Calcutta Diocese, the central and North Eastern Diocese of the Indian Orthodox Church or otherwise also known as the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.
