St. Peter’s Roman church is found at 1529 Assembly St. In Columbia, South geographic region. This can be the second building of the oldest Catholic parish in Columbia and therefore the Midlands of South geographic region.The first resident Catholic priest came to Columbia in 1820. St. Peter’s initial church, designed by the South geographic region designer architect, was completed in 1824. This church was dismantled within the early decennary to create the new sanctuary.
The new church was designed by Frank Pierce Milburn, a Southern designer. The look and fundraising was done mostly by Father Thomas J. Hegarty. Construction started in 1906 and was completed in 1908.The Gothic Revival church was designed with redness brick with Bedford sedimentary rock and uninteresting glazed earthenware trim. The roof was Buckingham Slate. The steeple is flat-top with a cross and is 163 foot (49.7 m) higher than grade.The St. Peter’s Church is on the National Register of Historic Places.
