St Mary´s Church with its lovely Fresco Chapel is a central focus for visitors to Pischelsdorf. The building of St Mary´s was initiated by Cotafried and his wife Kephahilt. It was consecrated by Vivilo, the first Bishop of Passau, on November 01, 739. Cotafried founded a Monastery for his daughter Cotalind to serve God beneath a black veil. In the year 803, Cotalind and her brother Popili endowed St Mary´s Church with all hides of land and possessions to the Diocese of Passau. That´s how the village of Pischelsdorf received its name, originally meaning “Bishop´s Dorf”, the village of the Bishop.
The church you see today was built under parish priest Friedrich Peterlehner from 1392 to 1419. It is probably an early work of Master Builder Hans of Burghausen for its uniform and wide choir ambulatory. The murals depict on the north wall of the Fresco Chapel Christ in the Mandorla sitting in the Last Judgment with sword and fleur-de-lis. Right of it are the Apostles with Saint Peter, left of it the Damned and underneath is a memorial to the founders of the Church, Cotafried and Kephahilt, with their daughter Cotalind beneath the black veil.
The Church with its Baroque altars, the Rectory and a substantial part of the village were destroyed by a great fire in 1837. The Madonna Statue that was created by Bonaventura Schwanthaler around 1700 was saved from the fire. In 1984 the Parish Church was restored to its original appearance.
