St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church may be a mission of the Episcopal jurisdiction of North geographical region. The church is found at the corner of Iredell and West Main Streets in Durham, a brief distance from Duke University’s East field. St. Joseph’s began as a Bible study organized by William A. Erwin before the flip of the 20 th century, and have become a mission of the jurisdiction of North geographical region in 1908. Past priesthood of St. Joseph’s embody its 1st curate, John Shelby Spong (1955 to 1957), UN agency later became bishop of the Episcopal jurisdiction of metropolis.
After fifty years as a parish (or independent congregation), St. Joseph’s became a mission once more in 2006, once the church split over problems with human gender. With the support of Bishop Michael Curry, St. Joseph’s referred to as a brand new vicar, Rhonda Lee, in Advent of that year. Since 2006, the church has enjoyed new life as alittle congregation, wherever laypersons play an important role within the lifetime of the church.
St. Joseph’s has reinforced its community ties, celebrating Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, and Easter liturgies put together with the Episcopal Center at Duke, and respondent a brand new decision to ministry with the church’s homeless neighbors. St. Joseph’s may be a member of Durham Congregations in Action, and supports Housing for brand new Hope and concrete Ministries of Durham. In could 2008, the church celebrated its centennial and launched its second hundred years with a weekend of worship and fellowship, attended by members and friends from across North geographical region and on the far side.
