Sri Narsimha Perumal Temple in Singapore was built in 1860s by Narsimhaloo Naidu whose family deity was Narsimha. He was a wealthy person and donated some of his land towards the building of the temple. The temple was initially known as Narsinga Perumal Kovil; Perumal being the name of Lord Vishnu who is the Preserver of the Universe according to the Hindu belief. Later on the name was changed to Sri Srinivasa Perumal. The original temple was in the form of a simple brick building comprising of a Mandapam (Main Hall) and a large pond. The pond was later on filled up in the 1920s for health reasons. Over the years the temple has undergone quite a few renovations and additions. In 1966, P. Govindasamy Pillai, a well known merchant and a philanthropist financed the renovation of the temple and gopuram and the wedding hall were added to it during this period. It was gazette as a Singapore National Monument on November 10, 1978.
