Sri Govindarajaswami Temple, Sri Govindaraja Swami is considered to be the elder brother of Lord Balaji and His temple is one among the most important temples in Tirupati. Which has traditional architectural style of Vaishnava sect. It is believed that the foundation stone of this temple was laid by Ramanuja in 1235. In addition to the Gopuram, there are two shrines inside this temple that are encircled with two outer walls. The southernmost shrine houses the idol of Lord Parthasarathy, while the northern one has the idol of Lord Govindaraja. Devotees can also offer prayers at other sub shrines in the temple including Sri Ramanuja, Sri Kurath Alwar, Sri Kalyana Venkateswaraswami, Sri Andal and Sri Mudal Alwar. The temple complex also houses small shrines of Sri Salai Nachiyar Ammavari, Sri Manavala Mamuni, Sri Chakrathalwar, and Sri Vyasaraja Anjaneya Swamy. This temple is also known for shrines of Sri Madhurakavi Alwar, Sri Vedantha Desikar and Sri Thirumangai Alwar.

Sri Govindarajaswami Temple is the biggest temple in Tirupati Town and attracts lakhs of pilgrims. A large number of inscriptions found in this temple and in the Sri Venkateswara Temple at Tirumala help us to trace its history. The earliest of the records belong to the year 1235 A.D when the Chola King, Raja Raja III was ruling the place. In the year 1239 A.D the queen of Viranarasinga of Yadavaraya made a gift for decoration of the chariot and carrying necessary repairs. The temple came in for greater importance in 1506 A.D. during the rule of Saluva dynasty of Vijayanagar and from then onwards different rulers in a different way developed the temple. It is built by the Nayakas, the successors to the Vijayanagar empire. Govindaraja Swami Temple has a remarkable outer gopuram and an inner gopuram. The temple has an impressive outer gopuram. The inner most gopuram is the earliest one, dating from the 14th-15th centuries and has carvings that depict scenes from Ramayana and Lord Krishn’s life.

Dress Require: A woman devotee can wear saree or a chudidar with chunni, whereas a male devotee can wear dhoti or lungi with uttareeyam or kurta-pyjama. A simple shirt and trousers are also allowed, but it would be ideal if men wear dhoti and uttariyam. Other than these traditional dresses, no other outfits like bermudas, T-shirts, jeans, shorts and other Western-style dresses are permitted.

Bus : APSRTC buses connect all towns in Andhra Pradesh with Tirupati. Tamil Nadu public transport corporation buses connect many cities in the state with Tirupati. KSRTC buses connect many cities in Karnataka with this holy city. The city has a wide network of inter state and inter city buses. Bus stops can be found all over the city from where you can catch a bus to your desired location.
Train : Tirupati Main is a major railway station and has five platforms and presently undergoing modernization. Tirupati is well connected to major cities across India especially Chennai, Bangalore, Kochi, Quilon, Trivandrum and Hyderabad. It is also connected by Chennai sub-urban railways in North-western line. Renigunta junction which lies on the busy Chennai – Mumbai rail corridor, is 15 km away from Tirupati city. Tirupati is starting point of many trains including, Tirupati-H. Nizammudin AP sampark kranti express, Hari priya express, Narayanadri express, Venkadadri express, Rayalaseema express. Recently, a double decker intercity express was introduced between Tirupati and Kacheguda.
Air : Tirupati Airport is located 15 km from the city center and has flights to Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, New Delhi. Additionally the airport offers flights to Coimbatore, Kolkata, Mumbai. The closest international airport is located in Chennai, (Chennai International Airport) which is 130 km (81 mi) from Tirupati. The Tirupati airport is not yet upgraded to an International airport.

By Foot : Tirupati is comparatively a small city, just 16 km, and some of its areas can be easily explored on foot. In fact the religious temples and some other holy places can only be explored on foot.
