Sri Govinda Bhagavatpaada Cave attracts a large number of pilgrims every year. This cave is associated with Shri Adi Shankaracharya, the great sage of Hindu Philosophy and his great guru Shri Govinda Bhagavatpada. Shri Aadi Shankara reached Omkareshwar sometime in 8th century travelling from Kaladi, a small village in Kerala. Shankara met his guru Shri Govinda Bhagavatpaada in this cave and took his diksha and stayed with him for more than seven years to attain spiritual education under this great Guru. His journeys to four corners of India as a reformer actually have started from Omkareshwar. His wisdom in spirituality was incomparable and that is the reason for his popularity among the spiritual students throughout India. He imparted amazing spiritual knowledge to the world. Hindu devotees from all over the world visit this holy place for its spiritual importance. Locals believe that when Aadi Shankara used to reside in the cave, a massively dangerous flood that rose in River Nardmada and Aadi Shankara, through his intelligence prevented the water from entering into the cave through using a small bowl.

Sri Govinda Bhagavatpaada Cave or a cave of Adi Shankaracharya is just behind the Omkar Mandhata temple, there is a when he first met his Guru Govind Govindpaada. An idol of Shankaracharya is also installed in the cave. Founder of Sikh religion Guru Nanakdevji visited this place. It is said that a Muslim fakir Godadshah briefed about Omkareshwar Parikrama to Nanakdev. Inspired by the fakir, Nanakdevji did a parikrama. Many Sikh devotees come to visit this place during the year.

Taxi : Omkareshwar is well connected by a road network and national highways. The tourist will reach to Omkareshwar by taxi. the traditional Indian taxi charges of Rupees eight to twenty are charged for each Kilometre.

Bus : State owned bus services are available to Omkareshwar from major cities like Khandwa (60 km), Ujjain (133 km) and Indore (80 km). Omkareshwar is situated at distance of about 884 km from Delhi. Many private luxury buses are available on this route.

Train : Omkareshwar Road railway station is situated at a distance of about 12 km away from Omkareshwar city center. Omkareshwar Road is connected to major railway stations at Khandwa (50 km) and Indore (65 km). These main railway stations are conected to central India viz Delhi (Amritsar Express) and Mumbai (Gkp Ltt Exp). Taxi charges about Rs 300 from railway station to the heart of the city.

Air : Indore airport, which is 80 km away from Omkareshwar, is the nearest airport. Indore is connected to major airports in India including Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi. Taxis are available from the airport to Omkareshwar, it takes about 2 hours and the fare is around Rs 1,800.
