Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens is major tourist attraction in Mysore city . The Mysore zoo is over a century old and has an interesting history of its own. The zoological gardens in Mysore were set up by Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar who is acclaimed as one of the architects of modern Mysore. The Maharaja was a nature buff and set up a number of gardens and parks in Mysore. The Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary was established during the reign of the Maharaja to entertain important visitors to Mysore and give them the opportunity to observe the animals in their natural habitat. The huge trenches draws big crowd. Other exotic animals of Mysore zoo include Giraffes, Zebras, White Deer, African Elephants, Bears, Porcupines, Rhinoceros, Tapir, Otters etc. The Indian species of note includes Gaur, Bisons, Nilgai, Spotted Deer, Black Bucks, Bears, Tiger, Jakal, Barking Deer, Panther, White (albino) Tiger, Tigers, Lions, Leopards and a great number of elephants.

HistoryEdit

The zoo is 100 years old started by Chamarajendra Wodeyar in 1892. Now it is managed by the Zoo Authority of Karnataka. Mysore zoo is place for a fun filled outing as well as a place to learn more about the behavior of animals and birds. The zoo is sprawled over 250 acres of land including the Karanji lake.

Taxi : Mysore is well connected by a road network and national highways. The tourist can reach to Mysore by taxi. The normal Indian taxi charges of Rupees 8 to 20 will be charged for each km.

Bus : There is an excellent bus service provided by Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation. Vanities of tourist buses are available from Bangalore to Mysore and fare is about Rs 4 to 5 per km.

Train : Mysore railway station is connected to Bangalore, which is 140 km away. Bangalore is well connected to all the other cities in India. Direct trains are also available from Mumbai (Ajmer Ex), Delhi (Swarna Jayanti Ex), Kolkata (Howrah-Mysore Ex) and many other cities from all parts of the country. Air : Mysore has a small domestic airport which is connected only to Bangalore. Bangalore is also the nearest international airport which is at a distance of 140 km away from Mysore. There are regular flights to Bangalore from all the major cities in India. Bangalore is connected to many international cities as well. Others : Tongas are horse driven carts that are also means of transport in Mysore. They will take you around the city but at slow and steady pace. If you want a close look at the city and catch some rare sights that you would not otherwise see then you could try this mode of transport.
