The city of metropolis is that the county courthouse of St. Joseph County, Indiana, u. S., on the St. Joseph River near its southernmost bend, from that it derives its name. As of the 2010 Census, town had a complete of a hundred and one,168 residents; its Metropolitan Statistical Area had a population of 316,663 and Combined applied math space of 544,582. It is the fourth largest town in Indiana, and the economic and cultural hub of the Michiana region, with the University of Notre Dame settled simply to the north in unorganized Notre Dame, Indiana. The world was originally settled within the early eighteenth century by fur traders, and established as a town in 1865. The St. Joseph watercourse formed South Bend’s economy through the mid-20th century. Watercourse access aided serious industrial development like that of Studebaker, Oliver Chilled Plow Company and alternative giant firms.
