The ancient city of Sousse was built in the 9th century BC by the Phoenicians. The lively city was under the rule of Punic, Romans and finally the Muslims. Sousse has successfully retained its original character that is evident from the monuments, museums and buildings dotted around the city. The place is renowned for its scenic beaches, striking medina and restaurants that serve wide variety of seafood.
The old city area called Medina is popular amongst tourists, housing several shop that sell carpets, silver jewelry, woolen blankets and copper items. The Great Mosque of Sousse was built in the 9th century is a major tourist attraction and is renowned for its unique architecture. Besides this, other important tourist attractions in Sousse include The Kasbah, Archeological Museum, Museum of Kalaout el-Koubba and Zaouia Zakkak.
