Sonsonate, the capital of the department of Sonsonate, El Salvador; on the watercourse Sensunapan and therefore the railway from Salvadoran capital to the Pacific port of Acajutla, 21km(13mi) south.
Sonsonate was the centre of an expensive agricultural district, and one in all the busiest producing cities within the republic. It made material, pottery, mats and baskets, boots and shoes, sugar, starch, cigars and spirits. Through Acajutla it exported occasional and sugar, and foreign grain for distribution to any or all components of the country.
