One of the largest cities in the state of Maharashtra, Sholpur is both a city and a district. Solapur along with three other districts namely Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur form the South Western Maharashtra. It is situated near the borders with Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. It is ancient place with historical and religious importance with Shri Siddharameshwar as its chief deity.Solapur has a rich history and various dynasties ruled Solapur like Chalukyas, Andhrabhratyas, Yadavas, Rashtrkutas and Bahamanias. The name Solapur is combination of two words “Sola” and “Pur”. “Sola” means sixteen and “Pur” means village. This is relevant since Solapur is considered to include sixteen villages. There are quite a few places of tourist and religious interest in Solapur.

Solapur is known for its historical, religious, industrial and commercial importance. Ground Fort, Siddheshwar Temple, Mallikarjuna Temple, Parasnath Temple, Adinath Temple, Masjids, Churches and Agyari are the attractions of this place.Akkalkot is considered to be an important center of Datta. The Vatavriksha Temple of Shri Swami Samartha and Akkalkot Swami math are important religious places, which are visited by many devotees.Phandharpur the city of Pandhavi Vithoba is another most important pilgrimage center for the whole of India. It ranks first among the fairs in the state with an aggregate congregation of four to five lakh on and Kartiki Ekadasi.City’s important tourist destination is Siddeshwar temple the abode of siddharameshwar built in 16th century where as it also has samadhi of siddeshwar the Solapur is often referred as Siddeshwar Nagari yearly it attracts 35 lakhs priligrims, besides city is also famous for its Markandeya Temple[siddeshwar peth]of padamashali samaj build in 1893 AD and Venkateshwara Temple[daji peth] Built In 1948 AD,rupa bhavani temple Iis the abode of tulja bhavani built in 19 th century,shri shankar temple [akkalkot road] this has one of the highet gopuras of India temples.City has Bhui fort in center of it area.IT is important city for its Neighbouring cities because it serves as all around market.
