Located at the foot of lush Lyulin and Vitosha mountains, Sofia is the capital city of Bulgaria and of the oldest European cities. This city is exactly situated on the edge of the Sofia Basin, offering many historic monuments which reflect the mixture of Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian, and Turkish cultures. Many of the major universities, cultural institutions, and businesses of Bulgaria are concentrated in Sofia. The outlook of Sofia combines a wide range of arhitectural styles, some of which are hardly compatible. These vary from Christian Roman architecture and medieval Bulgar fortresses to Neoclassicism and prefabricated Socialist-era apartment blocks . A number of ancient Roman, Byzantine and medieval Bulgarian buildings are preserved in the centre of the city.
Theres a lot this city offers to a tourist which includes Ottoman mosques, onion-domed churches and Red Army monuments topped with air-punching Soviet soldiers. This city has an amazing amalgamation of Old east meeting with new west, which can be seen in many parts of the town that has luxurious five-star hotels, flashy shopping malls, excellent restaurant and bars and a skyline that best compliments a confident and cosmopolitan European capital. The outstanding Sofia attractions are Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Church of St George, Ivan Vazov National Theatre, St. Sofia Church, National Ethnographic Museum and many interesting buildings and sights.
