Slættaratindur is that the highest mountain within the Faroe Islands, at associate altitude of 880 metres. It’s situated within the northern a part of Eysturoy, between the villages of Eiði, Gjógv, and Funningur. Funningur lies at the foot of the mountain. Its name means that “flat summit”. It are often climbed in regarding four hours, and though the routes square measure steep, technical climb skills don’t seem to be necessary to achieve the summit. GWR state that “owing to the sunshine bending effects of atmospherical refraction, Vatnajökull (2119m), Iceland, will typically be seen from the Faroe Islands, 340 miles (550km) away”. This could be supported a claimed watching of Vatnajökull by a British sailor in 1939, throughout the British occupation of the Faroe Islands in warfare II once they were wont to monitor German shipping and submarine movements.
