Detail InformationEdit
Sky Plaza (also known as The Plaza Tower) is a 103-metre (338 ft) tower block, in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It is the second phase of a development in Leeds city centre, consisting of 572 student apartments. It was the worlds tallest student accommodation building until the completion of Nido Spitalfields in 2010 and whilst not the tallest building in Leeds, its roof is the highest point in the city as it is built on high ground. It can be seen from as far as 25miles (40km) from most areas.
The original planning application was an approved 26 storey scheme which was altered into the 37 storey tower. The design was submitted by Carey JONES Architects and the main contractor on site will be Shepherd Construction. Work on the foundations began in May 2007, with a completion date of 2009.The tower crane was being lowered on 24 February 2009 and the portable crane took down the rest of the tower crane on 1 March 2009.Owen Hatherley, writing in The Guardian, is critical of the building’s design, describing it as the “tackiest” example of “pseudomodernist” architecture in the UK.
