Sisimiut

Sisimiut lies immediately north of the Arctic Circle and is the northernmost town in Greenland with an ice-free harbour in the winter, while at the same time the southernmost town in West Greenland, where in winter and spring you can go dog sledding.
Greenland’s second largest town, Sisimiut, draws on a rich history of whaling, colonialism and modern Greenlandic town life, which together represent a strong mix of traditional and modern on an urban, arctic scene.
In winter, groups of snowboarders and snowmobile teams mix with dog sled drivers, while the hills and fjords are alive with hikers, mini cruising and visits to settlements in the summer.

Sisimiut is also the base camp for more specialized adventurers, who want to experience arctic diving, river fishing, heliskiing and long trips by dogsled in the wilderness. It lies 40 km north of the Arctic Circle. The town features an airport, weekly ferry connections, hotels and restaurants, municipal headquarters, culture centre, cinema, a high school, museum and many shops.
Air Greenland flies to Sisimiut via the international airport in Kangerlussuaq. From here there are regular flights to the other towns on Greenland’s west coast. Arctic Umiaq Line’s passenger ship, which has a scheduled service between Qaqortoq in South Greenland and Ilulissat in the north, also calls at Sisimiut.
You can see most of Sisimiut on foot. You can also get around the town by bus or taxi. Sisimiut’s wilderness is truly phenomenal and therefore a dog sled, snowmobile or skis are best suited for a winter exploration.
You can stay at hotels with several stars, the Seamen’s Home or the hostel. You can stay privately, in cabins or camp anywhere in the countryside.
