Simhachalam, the hill of Lion, is a Hindu pilgrim destination in the District of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, South India. The major attraction in this temple town is the Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha temple dedicated to twin incarnations of Lord Vishnu known as Narasimha (the man-lion) and Varaham. The town got the name from this temple placed atop a hill. The Narasimha temple is one of the eighteen temples in India dedicated to Lord Narasimha in India. The idol in this temple is always covered in Sandal paste all through the year except for a day. In that day the idol in its original form nijaroopa darshan” (holy appearance in true form) is open to devotees for only 12 hours. It is on the Akshaya Tritiya day falls in Vaisakha Month (May) The temple legends connect the Narasimha Avatar with father-son duo Hiranyakasipu (a Rakshasa King) and Prahlada, an ardent Devotee of Lord Vishnu. It is at this place Lord Vishnu appeared to protect Prahlada from the cruel hands of his father demon king Hiranyakasipu. Simhachalam temple town is getting developed now in a similar lines as Tirupati. There are many important temples in an around the temple town of Simhachalam.

Simhadri or Simhachalam is a Hindu temple located in the Visakhapatam City, suburb of Simhachalam in Andhra Pradesh, South India. It is dedicated to the incarnation (avatar) of Vishnu, known as Narasimha (the man-lion). The architectural style of the temple’s central shrine is Oriya; while, its entrance is Dravidian.The Historic Temple at the Simhachalam, built in the 11th Century, where the Lord Varaha Narasimha Swami’s temple is located, resembles the rich cultural heritage Visakhapatnam holds. Located on the Hill top, at a height of 244 mts, popularly called the Hill of the Lion Lord, is the temple of Lord Vishnu in the avatara of Sri Narasimha Swami varu.The region is a famous tourist spot as well. There are many facilities in this temple town for pilgrims and also for secluded stay. Simhachalam is rich in natural settings and beauty. The Simhachalam hillock offers many eye catching natural scenic locations. The forests around are well protected and offer lush green scenery. Many tourists trek or walk towards the hillock as part of the pilgrimage or adventurous travels.
