Silver Pagoda or The Temple of the Emerald Buddha as it is called, this Phnom Penh Buddhist attraction is situated in the premises of the Royal Palace. It was earlier a building made of wood but it was subsequently rebuilt with concrete and marble in 1962. The main attraction of the Silver Pagoda is that the flooring is made up with silver tiles, where every single tile weighs one kilogram. A total of 5000 tiles have been used in the construction of this temple.
Displaying a huge statue of the Buddha made with solid gold weighing 90 kilograms and an emerald Buddha embedded with baccarat crystal, there also are beautiful and interesting wall paintings depicted on the walls surrounding the pagoda. These paintings are relating to the Khmer account of the epic Ramayana. The Silver Pagoda also shares other attractive artifacts and precious gems within its fold with the visitors. During the Khmer Rouge regime this temple was considered to be one of the most important and perfect place of reverence.
